A conventional display packs pixels tightly on one flat surface. A 3D LED matrix spreads individually addressable light points across three dimensions — a volume of "voxels" (volumetric pixels) suspended on fine strands or a lightweight frame. Because the points sit at different depths, shapes appear to float, rotate and move through the air rather than across a pane of glass.
